District 10 Environment Committee 

Thursday, November 29, 2007 


Attendees:  Mike MacDonald (Chair), Chet Mirocha, Susan Jane Cheney, Deb 

Robinson (from the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom).   

Mike MacDonald called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.   

Susan Jane Cheney offered to take minutes.   

Discussion of the Committee’s history and review of past projects 

Ongoing events: 

Spring Parks Clean-up 

Como Lake Festival 

Mike reported that this event may not take place in 2008. 

Tree Trek 

Chet suggested Saturday, June 21st for a 2008 Como Park tree tour.   

Volunteer summer shoreline work sessions (partnership with EcoPartners) 

Fall buckthorn bust (in partnership with Parks Division and Como 

Woodland Outdoor Classroom) 

Ramsey County Birding Festival (Committee assistance in advertising this 


Projects (past and possible): 

Lakeside Pavilion garden maintenance: remove non-native plantings and 

add native plants to match existing native plant garden signage 

Aquatics Center: participate in the task force addressing renovation of the 

Como Pool (meetings scheduled to begin in August 2008) 

Recycling and resource recovery: a possible project that would mesh with 

council funding sources 

Residential buckthorn removal: an extension of buckthorn removal in the 

park, including education of residents about invasives and pick-up of 

buckthorn cut on residential properties 

Natural resources inventory of Como Park: continue the ongoing inventory 

with a plant survey, possibly involving UMN students 

Rain barrel program: highlight improvement of area water quality by selling 

rain barrels purchased with a Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD) 

grant at a discounted price 

Home energy review and assistance program: provide home energy 

audits and resources for residents 

Rock-Tenn (paper recycler/ garbage burner): Committee involvement with 

the existing task force addressing this issue 

Explore the possibility of involving residents, including high school science 

students, in the CRWD Como Lake volunteer water sampling program 

Promote an adopt-a-garden program for assisting with CRWD rain garden 


Mulch trees in the park 


Develop a community outreach program featuring talks on local 

environmental issues and projects 

Continue involvement with the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom 


Discussion of committee recruitment and expansion of volunteer base 


Next meeting 

The December meeting will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the District 10 

Office in the Como Streetcar Station on Thursday, the 27th.
