• Ramsey County Birding Festival
Val reported that the third annual Birding Festival will be held from
Thursday, May 1 through Sunday, May 4. A Como Park walk will take
place from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Val will provide posters when
available. The District 10 newsletter and Lakeside information kiosk were
suggested as promotional sites.
• Residential buckthorn removal
Val contacted District 12 and identified individuals involved with their
residential buckthorn removal effort. She has invited Ron Dufault to
attend our February meeting for a question and answer dialogue.
• Rain barrel workshop
Mike will write a grant proposal to the CRWD seeking funding for two rain
barrel workshops (early spring and early summer) with 40 District 10
residents in each session. These events will be led by the individuals who
conducted the 2007 District 11 workshop. Mike will look into space for the
workshops at the CRWD. Promotion will include notices in local papers
and District 10 website and newsletter and posters in local coffee shops
and the Lakeside Pavilion information kiosk.
• Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom
Deb suggested several ways for the district and committee to be involved
with the CWOC, including:
1. Provide meeting space at the District 10 office
2. Serve as repository for donations and grant funds
3. Develop a mentoring program for minority science students
In advance of specific planning for 2008 educational water quality events,
CRWD Outreach Director Elizabeth Storey is holding two guided
brainstorming meetings to assist in formulating a longer term CRWD
Education and Outreach Plan: Sessions are scheduled for Wednesday,
1/23, 2:00 - 4 p.m. and Tuesday, 1/29, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Susan Jane plans
to attend the first and will report to the committee.
• Como Tree Trek (Saturday, 6/21,10 a.m.)
Chet will send notices to the local papers. Posters will be placed in the
kiosk and coffee shops.
• Jess expressed interest in committee involvement with energy issues,
including Rock-Tenn. Discussion focused on possibly measuring the
district’s carbon footprint and devising strategies to reduce it. This might
involve college-level and younger students.
• Susan Jane suggested sending a letter to Councilmember Russ Stark,
familiarizing him with the committee’s accomplishments and activities.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
