District 10 Environment Committee

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Attendees:  Mike MacDonald (Chair), Chet Mirocha, Val Cunningham, Becky

Cline, Susan Jane Cheney

Mike MacDonald called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

February 20, 2008 minutes were approved.

Updates and reports:

Prior to the District 10 Board meeting last evening, Nate Johnson of Parks

Environmental Services presented a potential plan for vegetation

restoration on the east side of Como Lake.  Due to feedback from

residents, they will not be pursuing funding for the project at this time.

Mike reported that the Rain Barrel Workshop grant proposal he submitted

was under review at this evening’s Capitol Region Watershed District

(CRWD) board meeting, so we should be notified soon about funding.

The Committee discussed potential workshop locations.  Mike will follow

up on the suggestions.

Chet reported that he has a conflicting commitment and cannot conduct a

tree trek on Saturday, June 21.  He suggested June 14 (10:00 a.m. -

Noon) as an alternative date.  Meeting place will be at the Como Lakeside

Pavilion.  Chet will contact local newspapers to publicize the event.

Susan Jane noted that CRWD Educational Outreach Coordinator

Elizabeth Storey has expressed interest in partnering with the committee

on the tree trek by providing water quality information in addition to Chet’s

presentation.  Mike will contact Elizabeth regarding CRWD involvement.

Other potential CRWD summer outreach projects at Como include:

1. A weekday evening macroinvertebrate education event for parents and

children with Brandon Burns;

2. A Department of Natural Resources-directed fishing lesson activity for

parents and children.

Elizabeth also is looking into a fall music festival with Watershed Partners

where the committee might have informational displays, and she is

interested in training more volunteer classroom presenters for water

quality talks and activities with students.

Susan Jane conveyed a message from Deb Robinson that she has

$140.00 leftover from the Como Bird Habitat Analysis funds to contribute

to the Como Park Bird List project proposed by Joan McKearnan.  Mike

will contact Joan about this project.

The next Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom Advisory Group meeting is

scheduled for March 26, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at the Street Car Station.  The

focus will be a review of project goals with Parks Landscape Architecture

Val will contact John Moriarty regarding an informational poster for the

Ramsey County Birding Festival.  Val will be leading Como Park bird walk

on Saturday, May 3, at 8:00 a.m.

A Como Campus bird event is taking place on May 10, International

Migratory Bird Day.

The annual St. Paul Spring Parks Clean-up will be held on Saturday, April

12, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.  Mike will contact Meghan Manhatton, Parks

coordinator for the event, regarding “zero waste” registration training and

notify committee members who have expressed interest in participating.

Jess Roberts reported to Mike that he plans to write an article regarding

the Rock-Tenn issue for the District 10 newsletter.  Jess also is working

with a UMN professor on a carbon footprint study.

Mike announced that Parks Director Bob Bierscheid will be speaking at

the District 10 meeting on April 15.

The nomination of the Parks Environmental Services staff (Adam Robbins,

Nathan Johnson, and Meghan Manhatton) for the 2008 Sustainable St.

Paul Awards was approved at the March District 10 Executive Committee

meeting.  Susan Jane and Deb Robinson submitted the nomination

materials on behalf of the District before the 3/12 deadline.  Recognized

nominees should be notified by April 1st

New business

Val Cunningham has applied for a $500.00 St. Paul Audubon grant to

purchase additional native plants for the garden just north of the Lakeside

Susan Jane reported that dates for assisting Eco Partners with Como

shoreland weeding and/or planting will be Tuesday, May 13 and Tuesday,

June 24, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on both evenings.  The fall buckthorn bust is

scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 9:00 a.m. - noon.

There was brief discussion about devising an alternative Como Pool plan.

Susan Jane will bring up this idea at the next Friends of Como Park

The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
