Betti Iwanski, Chet Mirocha, Mike MacDonald, Susan Jane Cheney
Committee Chair Mike MacDonald, called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
Reports and Updates
1. Bluebird nesting boxes:
Sharon reported that Great River School students had constructed new
bluebird houses for the park from Peterson kits. These will replace the
houses that were removed last month.
2. 2009 rain barrel workshops:
Mike MacDonald contacted the Capitol Region Watershed District about a
grant for next year’s workshops, and it appears that funding is possible but
on a smaller scale. Mike proposed a 1-day event with 40 participants.
Regarding a workshop location, Mike will check with Verde about sites
and Val Cunningham will look into holding a workshop at Lyngblomsten.
3. Residential buckthorn project:
Val and Betti Iwanski presented results of the visual survey of buckthorn
they conducted in the Midway Parkway/Hamline Avenue area. Val
reviewed the information provided by District 12 regarding their residential
buckthorn program and distributed a brief summary of their project. A
March 5th lecture on buckthorn and other invasives by Landscape
designer Erik Olsen (at Lyngblomsten) will provide a kick-off opportunity
for informing the public about the residential buckthorn removal project.
The plan is to focus initially on a sub-area of the district and to flyer homes
identified with buckthorn after the March program.
4. Other lectures:
1) February 5th: Household Energy Conservation (at the Capitol Region
Watershed District Office)
Betti distributed brochures about the MN Clean Energy Resource
Teams (CERTS) program. Betti and Jess Roberts are working on
details of the presentation, including presenters and a poster to
2) April 2nd: Hostas for the home garden (at the CRWD Office)
