District 10 Environment Committee 

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 

Attendees:  Mike MacDonald (Chair), Val Cunningham, Becky Cline, Joan 

McKearnan, Susan Jane Cheney 

Mike MacDonald called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. 

March 19, 2008 minutes were approved with one correction. 

Updates and reports 

Despite cold weather, the Como Spring Parks Cleanup Kick-off Event was 

well attended.  Committee members helped with Eureka Recycling’s Zero 

Waste set-up and handed out trash bags and gloves.  Val Cunningham 

received a St. Paul Parks Department Certificate of Recognition for her 

volunteer work on Como bluebird trails. 

Parks Environmental Services Staff Adam Robbins, Meghan Manhatton 

and Nathan Johnson will receive the 2008 Sustainable Saint Paul Award 

for which they were nominated by District 10. 

Mike reported that sign-ups for the rain barrel workshops are going well. 

Boy Scouts will be distributing flyers in a large area north of the lake; 

Committee members will cover remaining portions of the district. 

Event planning 

Ramsey County Birding Festival: 

Susan Jane will put a poster in the Lakeside Pavilion information kiosk. 

Mike will post notices on the District 10 and Friends of Como Park 

websites.  Val will lead a Como Park birding walk from 8 - 9:30 a.m. on 

Friday, May 2. 

Como Pavilion Native Garden cleanup and restoration: 

Val has scheduled a planning meeting for the garden work for Sunday, 

April 20 at the Coffee Grounds.  She has been awarded a $500.00 St. 

Paul Audubon Society grant to purchase plant materials.  Landscape 

designers Erik Olsen and Molly Rosenberg will assist with the garden plan 

and plant selection. 

Como Shoreland summer work sessions: 

Evening weeding and/or planting events in conjunction with Eco Partners 

are scheduled for Tuesday, May 13 and Tuesday, June 24, both from 6:00 

to 8:00 p.m.  Mike will post these dates (and that of the fall buckthorn bust 

– Saturday, October 11, 9:00 a.m. to noon) on the District 10 and Friends 

of Como Park websites.  The June event will take the place of the regular 

Environment Committee meeting on Wednesday, June 18. 

Como Park Bird List: 

Joan is working on printing arrangements and plans to have the list ready 

for the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC) Field Day on May 


Tree Trek:


Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD) Educational Outreach 

Coordinator Elizabeth Storey printed flyers for the Trek.  Susan Jane will 

check with Deb Robinson about the large wooden sign that has been used 

in the past to designate a meeting place. 

CRWD education events: 

Susan Jane reported that CRWD macroinvertebrate education events for 

parents and children (ages 6 to 11) led by bug expert Brandon Burns will 

be held from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 at Como Lake and on 

Thursday, June 26 at Loeb Lake.  Department of Natural Resources 

MinnAqua staff will conduct fishing lessons for children from 6:00 – 8:30 

p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at Loeb and on Tuesday, July 8 at Como. 

Elizabeth Storey also is seeking volunteer summer event assistants and 

volunteers for CRWD raingarden maintenance.  For more information,

Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom 

The next CWOC Advisory Group meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 

April 30, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at the Street Car Station.  There will be will be 

continued review of project goals with Parks Landscape Architecture staff. 

A May Field Day with Como Park Senior High School and B2REU (Bridge 

to Research Experience for Undergraduates) will take place at the 

woodland site on May 23, 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  Contact Deb Robinson at

New projects 

There was brief discussion of 

1. A residential buckthorn program 

2. An environmental footprint program (encompassing water usage and 

waste production in addition to carbon consumption) 

3. An in-depth chemical analysis of Como Lake water.
