(Updated 6/23/2010) - Pool Construction Timeline
(The following information was provided by Saint Paul Parks and Recreation)
Como Park has a long history of being one of Saint Paul’s crown jewels. Como Park features an accredited zoo, renowned conservatory, expansive green space, golf course, lake, tennis courts, athletic fields including three new artificial turf fields and a host of other park amenities. Como Park also is home to an aging pool that is in desperate need of replacement.
Como Pool has extensive infrastructure, mechanical and electrical issues that have deteriorated to the point that short term repairs will no longer be sufficient. The City remains committed to keeping a pool in Como Park. To address this commitment, the next steps will be to take the current facility out of operation for a period of time, and begin a detailed design process with the intent to have the facility online at a future date.
Development of the construction plans and specifications for the pool, bath house, concessions building, and parking lots is currently under way.
Bidding of the project is anticipated for early August.

On December 16, 2009, the Saint Paul City Council approved a 2010 city budget 7 to 0. The final budget includes funding for the Como Aquatic Center by federal Build America Bonds, along with city sources previously set aside for a Como Aquatics Support Facility. Construction will be scheduled to proceed in 2010, with pool opening anticipated in 2012. This accelerated date is possible because the current budget takes advantage of municipal bonds provided by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Previous budgets deferred replacement of the pool to 2011- 2012, with funding through the St. Paul Capital Improvement Budget.
Plans for the area south of Horton Avenue and west of Lexington Parkway are anticipated to proceed in three phases. The first phase would include the pool with aquatics support facility, tennis courts, and realignment of Como Avenue. The support facility would offer a concession sales area to service the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom and soccer complex in addition to the pool area. Future phases would address the improvement of Jessamine Avenue, softball fields and related trails.
