Transportation Open House (UPDATED Aug. 19)
Thursday, August 12, 2010 9:00 AM

Update August 19 - Missed the Open House? Public input online until August 27

Were you unable to get to the August 12 Transportation Open House? You still have an opportunity to provide your comments on the recently released concept drawings for improving transit/shuttle, parking, pedestrian and bike paths, roadways and signage/wayfinding. The City of St. Paul has posted the drawings on the official Transportation Implementation Plan (TIP) web site. The survey will remain on the site until August 27.  Includes video of the presentation.

Neighborhood input is needed to discuss issues pertaining to transportation in and around Como Park. The second, and final, open house will take place on August 12 from 6-8 PM at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory Visitor Center, 2nd floor (1225 Estabrook Drive, Saint Paul, MN). This will be the last chance to explore proposed changes and provide public input on transportation in and around Como Park. These changes may include new parking structures, street changes, and new shuttle routes. Please attend and help shape the future of the Park, its impact on neighboring communities and long-term livability and sustainability as a generator of economic and leisure activities.

Como Park has long been known for its high use and diverse recreational options as well as its green spaces. With more than three million annual visitors, Como Park lacks a comprehensive transportation strategy. Instead, disconnected parking lots, backed up traffic, cars circling residential areas and safety violations are noted, especially during peak times in summer months. The Transportation Plan aims to improve these scenarios.

Initial plans in Como Park may include: changes in parking lots, lot usage and streets, including new construction; wayfinding and directions for visitors through use of electronic and other signs; creating incentives for shuttle and public transportation, connecting bike/walking trails and enhancing pedestrian and/or vehicle safety.

Parks and Recreation officials and the transportation consultants, Kimley-Horn and Associates, will be presenting specific proposals regarding transportation issues. A formal presentation will be made at 6:30 PM.

Residents are encouraged to offer their own suggestions and solutions to the traffic problems in the neighborhood. This public input opportunity is a large part of a current planning group which includes City officials, private businesses and citizens. Persons who are regular or infrequent users of the park and its neighbors are important stakeholders in the outcome of this Improvement Plan, which is scheduled to be completed by September 2010.
