Como Lake Curbside Cleanup (Fall 2010)
Friday, October 01, 2010 2:00 PM

Last spring, the Como Lake Neighbor Network (CLNN) teamed up with District 10's Environment Committee, the Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD), the City of St. Paul Public Works, and the Freshwater Society, to organize the Como Lake Curbside Cleanup along the east side of Como Lake.

This fall, they've also added new partners, including St. Paul Parks and Rec, Como Senior High, Conservation Corps Minnesota - Youth Outdoors, and Hamline University's Wesley Center.

The purpose of these events are to raise awareness in the Como neighborhood of the "nutrient problem" impacting Como Lake, and to introduce a twice-annual neighborhood activity that could positively impact this problem.

(If you're not familiar with how this problem impacts Minnesota's lakes and rivers, check out the video above)

The spring event was wildly successful. We prevented 30 pounds of phosphorus from entering Como Lake and the Mississippi River, which could have fueled as much as 30,000 pounds of algae!

This fall's curbside cleanup will take place from 8 AM - 12 PM on Saturday, October 16. Click here to view the cleanup brochure and see if you live near a project area.

These cleanups are taking place all over Saint Paul, and you can organize one on your block on a different day as well. Contact your block leader to start coordinating a cleanup in your neighborhood.
