Michael joined District 10 after 15 years as a staff member at AFSCME Council 5, the Lakes and Plains Regional Council of Carpenters, and the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly, where he was editor of The Union Advocate newspaper. He has been a board member of local and national nonprofits, as well as president and a charter member of Local 51 of The Newspaper Guild. He has a bachelors degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, and a master's degree in Advocacy and Political Leadership from UMD. He is an avid cyclist, is active in the St. Paul Bicycle Coalition, and is a member of the citizens' advisory committee for the St. Paul Grand Round. He and his wife, Katie, have lived in Como since 2001. They can be seen strolling the streets as their dog, Mason, attempts to rid the neighborhood of its surplus squirrels and rabbits.
