Neighborhood Relations & Safety Committee
December 13, 2012
Historic Streetcar Station
Members Present: Ted Blank (Chair), Laurie Erickson, Jackie Gulbranson, Mary Michalski, Pete Bolstad
Members Excused: Dolores Rufenacht
Staff Present: Jessie Currier
The meeting was called to order at 6pm; the committee had no meeting in November.
Ted welcomed new members and the group did introductions.
The committee discussed an application for a STAR Grant to fund bump outs at the corner of Hamline and Nebraska; the grant application is expected to be seen in February or March. The Safety Committee is also investigating the feasibility of a crossing flag system, modeled after similar programs in Madison Wisconsin and Kirkland Washington, to help increase the visibility and safety of pedestrians.
The committee brainstormed potential fundraisers, including a home tour, updating the neighborhood welcome booklet to include advertising space and hold an event similar to the pancake breakfast, such as a spaghetti dinner or chili cookoff.
The group identified areas where we would like to increase outreach: Businesses, the Energy Park area, seniors, new neighbors and recruiting new block club leaders for 2013. The group also discussed holding a “Meet the Board Members” event so the community can be more familiar with the Board.
The committee discussed coordinating a Safety Fair at the end of April or beginning of May that would include information/demonstrations about: pet safety, bike safety, home or personal security tips and fire safety. The North Dale Community Center was discussed as a potential location for the event.
2013 Areas of Focus
The committee chose the following areas of focus for 2013:
Meet the Board Members Event
Como Regional Park Advisory Committee (CRPAC)
Pete attended the most recent CRPAC meeting and gave updates on some of the issues they have been working on. There will soon be electronic signs in the park. The new gorilla habitat is scheduled to open in June, as is the newly renovated Como Play area. Updates to the Japanese Gardens are expected to be completed in April of 2013. There was some discussion about the CRPAC and its status. It was recommended that if that group disbands, that the District 10 board lobby to get a park representative to come to our meetings.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.
