Attendees: Sharon Shinomiya, Val Cunningham, Ron Edlund, Mike MacDonald, District 10 Administrator & Coordinator Jessica Bronk, Susan Jane Cheney

Committee Chair Ron Edlund called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

March meeting minutes were approved.

Sunday Series
Erik Olsen’s presentation on urban gardening with native plants on 4/15 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church was extremely well attended. Possible topics for next year’s series, including local birding, an update on Watershed District projects, an update from the Como Park Advisory Committee on Park projects, streetcar history, a zookeeper presentation, a turtle presentation by Herpetologist John Moriarty, and an Extension Service presentation, were briefly discussed.

Nomination Award
Susan Jane Cheney reported that, on behalf of the Committee with the approval of the District 10 Executive Committee, she submitted a nomination of the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom for the 2012 St. Paul Heritage Preservation Award in the Organization/Community Education Project category – and that the Project will receive the Award! Co-sponsors, the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission and Saint Paul Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, recognize projects, individuals and organizations that enhance and celebrate the City’s cultural resources. Conceived of in the context of the Committee’s collaboration with the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Division on buckthorn removal almost a decade ago, the CWOC occupies and preserves the largest remaining significant woodland area of the Park and promotes it as a place for outdoor learning. The Awards Ceremony on May 15th will honor the CWOC Advisory Committee and the Parks Environmental Services and Design sections, all of whom have been instrumental in the project’s development.
Jessica Bronk asked for suggestions for an Award presenter from the District 10 community with a connection to the project; former Senator Ellen Anderson was suggested in addition to City Councilman Russ Stark.

Other updates:
1. Garden tour:
Val Cunningham reported that she has lined up twelve private home gardens, the flower box competitors at the Coffee Grounds, and three public gardens for the free tour, which will take place on Saturday, 7/21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
2. Tree appreciation:
Sharon Shinomiya announced the link for nominating trees: http://district10comopark.org/nominateatree.html; the deadline is 5/25. Eligible trees must be on residential properties in District 10. Jessica Bronk will send out additional e-blasts about the project and contact block club leaders.
3. Tree trek:

4. Tree watering bags:

New business
1. Jessica Bronk announced that the Monitor will feature District 10 news in each issue, and she requested an article about Environment Committee activities for May; Susan Jane volunteered to write up recent past and upcoming events.
2. Summer shoreline weeding events were brought up. A suggestion was made to put energy toward developing an adopt-a-shoreline program this year in lieu of these usual work sessions. There was a brief discussion of other groups that might assist Parks staff with weeding.
