District 10 Environment Committee
Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Attendees: Ron Edlund, Mike MacDonald, Betti Iwanski, District 10 Administrator & Coordinator Jessica Bronk, Susan Jane Cheney

Committee Chair Ron Edlund called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

The May meeting was poorly attended and there were no minutes.

Community garden
Jessica Brock reported that the favored site for a community garden is adjacent to the railroad tracks at Jessamine and Beulah Avenues; the site is owned by the railroad. She is working with St. Paul Public Works to obtain a permit from the MN Department of Transportation. Another site along Snelling Avenue is still a fallback alternative. Hopefully, a site will be secured for the 2013 growing season.

Lakeside Pavilion Garden weeding
Susan Jane Cheney reported that the Lakeside Pavilion Garden weeding session on Saturday, 6/16, went well despite a drizzle.

Tree trek
Betti Iwanski reported that she was one of about ten participants in the Tree Trek on 6/9. Leader Chet Mirocha gave a general introduction at Black Bear and spoke about the trees at three additional sites.

Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (CWOC)
Environment Committee liaison to the Como Woodland Advisory Committee (CWAC), Susan Jane Cheney reported that, for the time being, CWAC meetings will take place every other month rather than monthly. The next meeting, on 6/25, 6 - 8:00 p.m. at the Woodland, will feature a potluck picnic and honor Deb Robinson for her initiation of the project and tremendous contributions to its development. Susan Jane gave a brief report on upcoming CWOC steps, including woodland and prairie restoration and trail and signage installations, as well as teacher training.
Ron Edlund commented on an informative presentation about the Classroom at the June District 10 Board Meeting.

Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD)
CRWD Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) member Mike MacDonald reported that St. Paul Parks & Recreation Landscape Architect Don Ganje gave a presentation on the Mississippi River project Great River Passage at the last CAC meeting. He also reported that the CRWD is evaluating the results of monitoring water clarity, chlorophyll, and total suspended solids at Como and Crosby Lakes over the past year. Mike mentioned that the CRWD is shifting focus from a primary emphasis on what is coming into Como Lake to more attention to what is already in the lake. Committee discussion followed concerning the possibility of a public presentation regarding the history of Como Lake, including the CRWD’s measures to improve the water quality over the years.

New business
1. Betti Iwanski reported that the City is looking into expanding the scope of recycling, including: picking up compost-able materials and more plastics and pursuing a single stream approach. There was discussion about a presentation by Eureka at the July District 10 Board meeting, and Jessica Bronk will follow up. Jessica also brought up the topic of recycling at apartment complexes.
2. The idea of publicizing a potential restart-up of the CHEEP program was discussed.

The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
