More Ash Trees Coming Down

Ash trees are being removed in these corridors in District 10.

Saint Paul has begun removing 159 ash trees from boulevards in District 10. Trees will be removed from:

  • Almond west of Pascal
  • Arona between Wynne and Midway Parkway
  • Breda between Hamline and Arona
  • Chatsworth between Nebraska and Hoyt
  • Grotto between Arlington and Larpenteur
  • Montana west of Grotto
  • Nebraska between Victoria and Oxford
  • Pascal between Midway Parkway and Nebraska

Property owners received postcards in mid-December telling them trees adjacent to their property would be cut down. In 2017, Saint Paul expects to spend nearly $1.7 million to remove more 1,300 boulevard ashes across the city, plus at least 300 additional ash trees in parks. However, 175 trees on the Como Park golf course will not be cut down this year, as originally scheduled. Because the ground isn't frozen any more, heavy equipment could cause too much damage to the course, parks officials say. So, the new plan is to cut down the ash trees next winter.

The reason, of course, is the accelerating Infestation by the invasive emerald ash borer.  In 2016, four times as many boulevard trees became infested than in 2015. according to the city's forestry department. The department estimates that 97 percent of the city now has infested trees (see the map with all the red and pink on it).

This year's stepped-up removal plan is focused exclusively on ash trees that are confirmed to be infested, says Clare Cloyd, public information officer for Parks and Recreation. That's different than in previous years, when the city also removed some trees simply because they were at risk or were decaying for other reasons. This year's plan is intended tp remove infested trees before they become a physical hazard.

At this point, the city has no firm timeline on when stumps will be removed and replacement trees planted, Cloyd says.

This map shows the extent and concentration of emerald ash borer infestation in Saint Paul.
